How to fix a pull start that won’t retract | Or broken
How to fix a generator pull cord
After turning on the power switch and choke your portable generator, while pulling the starter suddenly the rope doesn’t retract or broken.😯🙆🙊!
What will you do?
Let’s see:
how to fix a pull start that won’t retract
What to do if you need:
recoil starter problems
-Pull start rope jammed
-Pull start rope won’t retract
-Pull start rope broken
Even if you own a leaf blower pull cord that won’t retract or pull cord on pressure washer won’t retract, Honda hrx217 pull cord won’t retract or lt50 pull start not catching.
In almost every situation, you don’t have to buy a new recoil starter except in case of several defective parts.
How does a pull start recoil work
The recoil starter assembly parts contain:
-Recoil launcher attached to Recoil fan cover by three Bolt flange. Contained all pulling start elements inside.
-Spring recoil starter reliable Reel recoil starter to Recoil launcher. It allowing pulling and retract movement when starting the engine.
-Reel recoil starter is a rubber mobile circular parts that contain in outer side the Recoil spring starter and inner side the Ratchet starter assembly. It is enrolled at its edge by a rope length 4 to 6 Ft. . Knot with one extremity by this rope and the other extremists troad Recoil launcher and attached to Grip starter.
-Ratchet starter is couple parts fixed to Reel recoil starter guide by Guide ratchet as its name. It engages the Starter Cup unlock way at pulling commands.
-Guide ratchet allows the both ratchet starter a 1/4 circle movement for engaging the rotary movement. It is separate from the Reel recoil starter by a washer and fixes all elements toward Recoil launcher by a screw setting.
-Sarter Cup it is a separate part fixed to flywheel in crankshaft axle by a nut.
Let you be guiding step-by-step to fix it yourself.
Even if your recoil starter can differ from mine, but the principle remains the same for portable generator, pressure washer, lawn mower and snow blower.
Step #1
Start unscrewing the three bolt flange with 8 or 10 millimeter socket or wench, screwdriver +/- depending your brand to remove recoil launcher to recoil fan cover.
Step #2
Remove the excess rope remaining in the Reel recoil starter.
Step #3
Use at least 4 inches or 122 millimeters of rope to replace the broken one.
Step #4
After getting the length of rope, you need to use a match to burn the rope ends to resist fraying. fix one end into the grip starter the other end goes to Reel recoil starter.

How to Fix a Pull Start that Jammed | Won’t Retract | Broken
If your pull start cord is jammed, it may be caused by rust spring recoil starter. Use WD-40 to grease the spring recoil starter without disassemble it. Pull gently on the rope with repeated jerks as you spray inside of the recoil launcher through these openings.
If it doesn’t work for you, follow step 1 to see what happened.
Sometimes because of bad pull starting habit, as one goes along can cause a pull start won’t retract problem.
When this happens, you will observe the rest of the non-retracting rope bending under the pea of the pull starter.
If the rope retracts a part of its length, solve the problem by increasing the number of turns of the reel pull starter by one turn or two.
If the rope is not retracting along its entire length, your spring is decompressed, i.e. it is crazy or broken.
In this situation, one of the spring’s notches may be damaged, either on the Reel recoil starter or Recoil launcher side. Only a total disassembly can help you solve this problem. But be careful! Such repair may cause injury.
Even if is not your case, you should always start your generator or lawnmower by pulling gently to its full couple length before pulling with full force.
How to recoil a pull start
Step #5
Match the holes in the Recoil Launcher and the Recoil Starter and insert the other end of the rope through both holes and make a tight knot.
Then Follow this video carefully to learn the best way to recoil a pull start.
Step #6
After Using the slit in Reel recoil starter to indent the rope and making about 5 turn counterclockwise direction hold the reel recoil starter and remove the rope to the slit, pull a little on the grip starter to unfold the rope then release slowly the reel recoil starter.
If there is excess rope remaining, repeat the operation by increasing the number of reel recoil starter turn.
Step #7
Then assemble le Recoil launcher, the recoil fan cover at the right direction. Make sure everything is Working properly.
